As a Carolina Teaching Resident, you will receive both professional and financial support as you simultaneously pursue a Master’s Degree in Education and have an immersive teaching experience in this fourteen-month program.
Innovation in Teacher Training
Carolina Transition to Teaching Residency prepares college graduates in any field to become teachers in rural South Carolina. It is designed for individuals interested in teaching in an elementary or middle school. The program provides extensive experience with students grades 2-8, coaching from College of Education faculty, and a year-long classroom residency with a mentor teacher.
Upon being accepted to the program, you will take graduate course work to develop a solid foundation in research-based teaching and curricula used in South Carolina schools. Anyone who is passionate about teaching in rural schools in South Carolina and making a difference in the lives of children in our partner district schools (Colleton County School District, Orangeburg County School District) should apply.
Residency Specifics
Carolina Transition to Teaching Residency is a fourteen-month residency program beginning in the summer and ending the following summer. The program focuses on elementary and middle school teaching curriculum.
All Carolina Teaching Residents will:
- Engage in summer institutes with a STEM focus
- Enroll in a full-time Master’s Degree program with courses taught at local schools
- Co-teach alongside a classroom teacher mentor
- Achieve South Carolina Teacher Licensure through Carolina Collaborative for Alternative Preparation (CarolinaCAP)
- Receive guided coaching and support from College of Education faculty
