Parent Participation in School Decision Making

One of the important ways that parents engage in their children’s learning and development is by participating in school decision making. In South Carolina, state law requires that every public school serving grades K-12 convene a School Improvement Council (SIC). SICs are made up of elected parent, teacher, and (in high school, student) representatives, as well as appointed community members. Ex officio members of the SIC must include the principal and may include other leaders in the school community as determined by the SIC.

SICs are one way that parents can participate in school decision making about their school’s improvement plans as well as provide regular input and feedback to their school. Many SICs go a step further and undertake projects that help their school meet its improvement goals.
