Cherokee Language Project
CFEC in partnership with Cathy Compton-Lilly, Ph.D. supported a family-community initiative that involves the creation of bilingual soft-bound children's books that introduce children to the Cherokee language. The texts have simple bilingual text (Cherokee and English) and a photo or painting to introduce children to simple Cherokee words and phrases. The topics, photos, and Cherokee translations will be negotiated/co-created with assistance from Anna Howard, a Cherokee-speaking graduate student, and tribal members. The project involved conversations with Cherokee tribal members and collecting photos and soliciting artwork to illustrate the books. We crafted seven different books and have disseminated them online and in hard copy.
