The College of Education is excited to announce a new corporate partnership in philanthropy with South State Bank which will help the college provide additional support to recent education graduates during their first three years as new teachers.
South State Bank, one of the fastest-growing regional banks in the South, choose to support the Carolina Teacher Induction Program (CarolinaTIP) through its generous donation.
CarolinaTIP supports new teachers as they transition from university students to leading a classroom of their own. More than 100 education alumni, from 63 schools, are participating in the program, which began in fall 2017 in an effort to reduce the rising number of new teachers leaving the profession.
“The work that CarolinaTIP is doing to improve teacher retention is a much needed program in our state,” said Donna Pullen, Director of Corporate Giving and Events Management for South State Bank. “Their hands-on approach and ability to respond quickly is helping new teachers navigate the challenges of being a public-school teacher, while building their confidence in the classroom.”
CarolinaTIP provides recent education graduates with three years of support through group workshops and individualized one-on-one coaching from experienced coaches. Teachers learn how to implement best practices ranging from behavior management to instructional strategies and receive in-class implementation support from coaches.
“My late wife, mother-in-law and my daughter are all teachers, so I understand how challenging the profession can be,” said Nathaniel Barber, Director of Community Development for South State Bank. “Many times, teachers use their own money to purchase materials and supplies for their classroom, and spend countless hours preparing each evening. Having these resources available as an extra layer of support is very valuable and I admire the work that Carolina TIP is doing in this area.”
“The results of the program speak for themselves – In the first two years, 100 percent of CarolinaTIP teachers have returned to the classroom,” stated Cindy Van Buren, Assistant Dean for Professional Partnerships at UofSC. “Our corporate partners, such as South State Bank, allow us to grow the program and therefore, to serve more teachers across the Midlands and beyond.”
