The Simulation and Interactive Learning Center (SILC) is a joint medical academic partnership in simulation between the University of South Carolina School of Medicine (USC SOM) and the Columbia VA Health Care System.

About the Center

The SILC is a 6,355 sq. ft facility that features a multitude of training equipment, including three high fidelity mannequins that simulate real human functions and sounds; three mannequins designed to teach advanced cardiac life support, 25 Basic Life Support training mannequins, and more than 50 additional skills training tools.

The center features a 25-person large classroom and 12-person smaller classroom, both with audiovisual capabilities; a 10-12 person  conference room; a practical skills training room; a BLS/ACLS training room; one functioning ICU patient room, one functioning Med/Surg patient room; and a realistic Operating Room, complete with a fully operational ventilator and Human Patient Simulator (HPS) mannequin capable of airway management capabilities, surgical procedures, and receiving medication therapy with realistic physiological responses.

Mission

The mission of the center is to provide a multidisciplinary learning environment whereby the incorporation of medical simulation teaching and interactive medical skills laboratory experiences are made available to all health care learners at the SOM and the VA. The SILC is focused upon providing state of the art simulation and learning for students, residents/fellows, and providers with a long term goal of developing inter-professional experiences.

Goal

The goal of the center is to improve faculty, staff, and student performance and promote a positive culture of learning
