About the Clinical Skills Center

The Center features ten examination rooms containing basic medical instruments, closed circuit monitoring with a central control room, and ample multipurpose space for instruction and briefings. The examination rooms accommodate one-on-one learner-patient encounters as well as teaching sessions.

Students from the following programs at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine utilize the patient examination rooms to interview and examine Standardized Patients (SPs):  Physician Assistant Graduate Program, Nurse Anesthesia Graduate Program, Medical Students, Resident Physicians, and other health-related professions.

SPs are members of the community hired and trained to portray a patient with a specific medical condition enabling the students to learn and practice communication skills and medical interviewing as well as performing physical examinations in a controlled environment under the supervision of medical faculty.

Standardized Patient Program

The Standardized Patient Program plays an essential role in providing students during all four years of medical school, alongside other health care programs, an invaluable opportunity to enhance their training and skills within a safe and controlled environment.
