Visual communications student wins national logo design competition

Carrie

Senior visual communications major and Honors College student Callie Hribar brought home top honors in the logo design competition sponsored by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

With the first place win, Hribar received a $250 cash prize, and her logo will be featured on all branded ads, signage and promotional material during the 2025 AEJMC conference in San Francisco.

Hribar submitted her entry this spring as part of an assignment in the Multimedia for Visual Communications course taught by associate professor Van Kornegay.

“Callie had a strong entry that met the requirements of the creative brief,” says Kornegay. “It’s a great design. The artwork creatively conveys a sense of the conference's location. It’s bold, simple and can easily be scaled up or down and remain legible.”

Hribar says she wanted to make the location of the conference immediately recognizable by using San Francisco's two iconic symbols — the Golden Gate Bridge and a cable car. "The bridge breaking out of the background is intended to subvert expectation and create visual interest," Hribar says. "Situating the cable car as if it is on the bridge also helped to create a unique sense of perspective and scale."

The competition drew 46 entries from seven universities. The top three entries were selected by seven judges from journalism programs and professional design agencies.
