Communications and Marketing

Typography

The university brand includes a selection of typefaces that can support a variety of design and communication needs.

The South Carolina brand uses a few specific typefaces to provide the opportunity for flexibility and balance across all communications to a variety of audiences. Some sizes, weights and combinations work better than others. Learn about the preferred uses, sizes, weights and combinations for each typeface, and see examples of how to properly set various instances of type.

Primary Sans-Serif Typeface

Berlingske Sans is our brand’s primary sans-serif typeface. It may be used in almost all applications. The sans-serif family should be used more than the serif family, but they complement each other nicely, so be sure to use both in your communications.

Uses: headlines, subheads, body copy, quotes, names
Font Weights: light, light italic, regular, italic, medium, bold, bold italic
Substitute Typeface: Arial

Primary Serif Typeface

Berlingske Serif is the brand’s primary serif typeface. It adds a level of sophistication to our communications, which helps balance the sleek, modern feel of our display and sans-serif typefaces. Berlingske Serif should be used as more of an accent font that supports the sans-serif, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be used more prominently if the situation calls for it.

Uses: headlines, subheads, body copy, quotes, names
Font Weights: regular, italic, medium, medium italic, bold, bold italic
Substitute Typeface: Georgia

Numeric Display Typeface

Karlie Extras Regular is a numbers-only display typeface that we use for large numbers and callouts. It adds a level of sophistication and a slightly vintage feel to any composition.

The typeface is only used for numbers; do not use any other characters. If necessary, use Berlingske Serif Bold to supply any missing characters.

Uses: Large numbers and callouts
Substitute Typeface: Georgia
