Environmental Communications in France and Switzerland

This Maymester section of JOUR 509 Environmental Communications will focus on communicating about the effects of climate change on the Alps. Students will form production teams to create short documentaries about different aspects of La Mer de Glace glacier in Chamonix, France. The course will begin in Geneva, Switzerland, and take a multi-day excursion to Chamonix.

When is the trip?

May 11 - 27, 2025
The trip is over two weeks and includes nine days in Geneva, Switzerland, and six days in Chamonix, France.


Who can go with us?

All students — undergraduate and graduate — of any major or degree program! CIC, SEOE, MART and French students especially welcome. 


What's the class?

The class will consist of 25 - 30 students who are registered for JOUR 509 - Environmental Communications. The class can count as a major elective for students in CIC, SEOE, French and Media Arts. 


Are there language barriers?

You do not need to know French, but it is helpful. Students wishing to receive credit in their French minor or major will have the opportunity to do projects in French.

Trip costs include:

  • $3,553 (includes accommodations, breakfasts, some lunches)
  • USC tuition for a 3-credit course (in-state tuition for all – $1,550 estimate)
  • Airfare: $700-1,200
  • $180: USC study abroad application and required emergency international insurance

Scholarships

CIC scholarships available: $1,000 - $1,500
The college has some study away scholarship money available for this course.

Do not wait too long because there are limited spots and we expect the class to be full before the first of the year. A $650 deposit secures your seat in the class. Deposit is 100% refundable until Jan. 1, 2025.
