Integrated Information Technology faculty and students are designing solutions and
creating new opportunities to enhance products, services and operations to better
meet consumer needs. We design better technologies, more secure cyberinfrastructure,
and more powerful data management. Our research contributes to advancing the science
and application of information technology and informatics.
Research Strengths
Cyberinfrastructure
We investigate techniques, technologies, and tools used in a modern cyberinfrastructure
comprised of high-performance systems that use, process, transmit, and store information.
This includes the design and implementation of high-speed switched networks, TCP optimization
and experimental evaluation of congestion control algorithms such as BBR, HTCP and
Cubic. It also includes applications of statistical methods and neural networks, web-based
data mining and knowledge management. Our research in these areas applies both to
the information systems and to the way students are taught and learn.
Our strengths include fundamentals, design, implementation and management of database
systems that form the foundation for information systems and data analytics. Research
topics include personalization, information retrieval, knowledge management, recommender
systems and text and image mining. Applications include healthcare informatics, intellectual
property law, social enterprises, electronic commerce and distance learning.
Our health IT and informatics researchers are engaged in a wide range of funded projects
related to mobile technologies, big data analytics, HCI/user experience, artificial
intelligence, IoT and IT-based innovation. Research addresses a variety of complex
problems in health care with an emphasis on innovation. Research strategies encompass
convergent, team-based methods and design science that engages diverse perspectives
of information technology and computing with health, social, behavioral and economic
sciences.
Research on human computer interaction addresses fundamental concepts such as artificial
intelligence as well as user experience and design. We study how information systems
can be conceptualized, designed, developed and applied to accomplish improvements
in how people work, make decisions and interact with each other. Our research solves
problems in a variety of fields including cyber security, health IT, e-commerce, and
computer-mediated learning
