Our advisors can help students with many support services, including:
- Academic goal setting
- Navigating campus resources
- Course selection
- Major changes
- Tracking progression towards graduation
- Registration-related issues
Academic advisors work closely with all undergraduate students to make sure that their experience in our college starts strong from the very first day of classes. Faculty Advising Fellows help hone their electives choices, professional development activities, post-graduation goals and opportunities.
Your assigned advisor will be able to be viewed in the Student Profile of Self-Service or Degreeworks Worksheet, typically one week after orientation. Your advisor will reach out to you one week prior to the start of classes via e-mail, but do not hesitate to contact them should you need something. Once you’ve attended orientation, we recommend that you begin to check your USC email account regularly (at least once a week).
Initial advising is done at orientation. During orientation, you will meet one-on-one
with an advisor. At that time, the advisor will evaluate any incoming credits and
where they might be applicable for your major and will assist with course selection
for that semester.
All students must be advised prior to the next semester they plan to take courses
in. Typically, advising for first-semester students begins in the sixth week of classes
as they prepare for their second semester. All students will receive instructions
on how to make that appointment via e-mail within four weeks of the start of each
semester.
We know that students have many goals for their academic experience. At orientation, you will be asked to complete an orientation worksheet and that helps our advisors individualize your academic plan. When filling out this worksheet, remember to include any credits you may be expecting (ex. AP, IB or dual credit) or any commitments that may impact what classes you can take in your first semester (ex. ROTC, marching band, collegiate-varsity athletics).
