Dr. Craig Allen has been celebrated as an “exemplary soloist” (Kansas City Star) possessing a “brilliant, nimble voice” (KC Metropolis), captivating audiences from opera houses to musical theatre stages. His recent performances illuminate remarkable versatility such as Zápisník zmizelého, or (The) Diary of One Who Disappeared, A New Brain, A Secret Garden and Four Opera Singers Walk Into a Bar. As a concert artist, he has been a featured soloist with the Inspirar Choir, Winthrop Chorale, Opera Carolina, York Choral Society, Simon Carrington Chamber Singers, and the Walla Walla Symphony, as well as on operatic stages in Europe.
A rare triple-threat artist, Dr. Allen's early career as a principal dancer in a variety of shows such as Giselle, The Nutcracker and Anything Goes, as well as numerous concert dance stages, informs his dynamic stagecraft. This artistry is seen through his 30+ directing and choreography credits, where productions like 9 to 5, Memphis, White Christmas and West Side Story. His philosophy on movement and dance was shaped by his dual bachelor's degrees in music and Theatre, along with a minor in Dance from Texas Tech University. His dance training includes extensive coursework not only at TTU but also at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, as well as participation in numerous dance conventions and continued work with the Skinner Releasing Technique.
Dr. Allen has demonstrated a strong commitment to student success, as evidenced by their continued achievements. His students have consistently earned recognition at the national, regional, state, and local levels, as Hal Leonard competition winners, and a Top 7 finalist in the National Musical Theatre Competition, where the grand prize is $10,000. His students have also gone on to perform as lead singers in Army Bands, on Broadway and Off-Broadway tours/shows, with cruise lines, and in various theme park productions both nationally and internationally. This pedagogical excellence stems from his innovative approach: he bridges classical technique with contemporary commercial styles, designs immersive masterclasses with Broadway artists like Sarah Hartmann, and champions adaptive learning models when institutional structures falter. His recently completed DMA from the University of South Carolina (2024) crystallized this methodology through his dissertation, From Classical to Contemporary: Popular Music's Role in Shaping Opera and Vocal Training, which explored the role of popular music in classical pedagogy.
Now serving as President of South Carolina NATS (2025–2027), Dr. Allen demonstrates leadership not only at the state level but also regionally, as Communications Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region of NATS. He has also served on numerous national committees for this organization. Beyond academia, he dedicates ten weekly hours to Grace Lutheran Church as AV producer. In all his work, he is guided by a singular conviction: that truly transformative artistry lives at the intersection of discipline, innovation, and service.
