Brandon Tregle

Brandon Tregle is the Director of Research for the Excellence in Policing and Public Safety (EPPS) Program at the Joseph F. Rice School of Law, University of South Carolina. His research focuses on evidence-based policing practices, particularly strategies to reduce crime while maximizing resource efficiency and minimizing citizen contact.

Dr. Tregle brings more than a decade of law enforcement experience to his academic work. He served as a patrol officer before becoming a legal advisor, where he ensured the legality of executive decisions, trained officers in criminal law and procedure, and provided statutory guidance and case law updates to department divisions and city leaders. He has since worked as a program evaluator and trainer for law enforcement agencies.

Dr. Tregle co-leads a portfolio of multi-million-dollar projects across several major U.S. cities. These initiatives implement and evaluate evidence-based practices addressing issues such as violent crime, property crime, case clearance, and officer well-being. As research partner, his role emphasizes adapting these approaches to the conditions of each city and providing agencies with data-driven deployment strategies that can be sustained over time.

Dr. Tregle also serves on the Executive Board of the American Society for Evidence-Based Policing, where he works to connect researchers and practitioners in advancing evidence based policing. He earned his Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Nebraska Omaha and his J.D. from Louisiana State University. His recent scholarly work appears in the Journal of Crime and Justice, Justice Quarterly, and Police Quarterly.
