Undergraduate Academic Advisor Career Ladder

Undergraduate Academic Advisors in the University Advising Center have a dedicated career ladder to formally recognize additional duties performed by advisors. 

Undergraduate Academic Advisor Tier II 

  • Serve as an Undergraduate Academic Advisor I for at least 24 months 
  • Demonstrate commitment, collaboration, and contributions to the University Advising Center,  the university academic advising community, and their assigned college/school
  • Submit an internal application to the UAC Tier Review Committee (which includes the college supervisor) 
  • Participate in a 60-minute conference with the UAC Tier Review Committee
  • Achieve Level I and Level II Certification in the USC Advisor Training Program.
  • Advise a minimum of 300 students for assigned majors.
  • List additional duties and responsibilities assumed as an Undergraduate Academic Advisor I. This can include advising upper class students, taking on expanded college duties, advising transfer students, or cross training to advise in multiple majors and disciplines.
  • Conduct academic interventions and communications with assigned advisees when appropriate.
  • Shadow at least three other academic advisors (minimum of 5 total hours) with one advisor outside of your immediate college/school and one advisor in the Office of Exploratory Advising & Academic Coaching.
  • Plan for and lead New Student Orientation college sessions and presentations.
  • Develop, maintain, and evaluate a flipped advising program 
  • Use Datawarehouse to analyze departmental data and trends 
  • Serve as the primary advisor for a specialized population of students (Ex. Honors, Opportunity Scholars Program participants, Veterans)
  • Implement career conversations into advising appointments based on national best practices and strategies
  • Conduct exit interviews with graduating seniors to determine post-graduation plans

 Undergraduate Academic Advisor I's who meet the requirements above should complete the online application for advancement to an Advisor II.


Undergraduate Academic Advisor Tier III

  • Serve as an Undergraduate Academic Advisor II for at least 24 months
  • Demonstrate commitment, collaboration, and contributions to the University Advising Center and/or their assigned college/school
  • Submit an internal application to the UAC Tier Review Committee (which includes the college supervisor) 
  • Participate in a 60-minute conference with the UAC Tier Review Committee
  • Achieve Level III Certification in the USC Advisor Training Program
  • Lead a college initiative or program (examples include, but are not limited to, assessment; student workshops; internships; mentorship; training; technology; etc.)
  •  Expansion of advisement to include co-curricular and career conversations
  • Faculty Engagement
  • Supervision of UAA I and II's
  • Mentoring and training of new advisors. 
  • Conduct Athletic Certifications and serve as liaison between athletic department and assigned college to ensure quality advising for student athletes
  • Serve as the curricular expert for a major
  • Manage an initiative or program for the college/school

Apply for Tier III Advancement

Undergraduate Academic Advisor II's who meet the requirements above should complete the online application for advancement to an Advisor III. 

 


Undergraduate Academic Advisor Tier IV

  • Serve as an Undergraduate Academic Advisor III for at least 24 months
  • Demonstrate commitment, collaboration, and contributions to the University Advising Center and/or their assigned college/school
  • Submit an internal application to the UAC Tier Review Committee (which includes the college supervisor) 
  • Participate in a 60-minute conference with the UAC Tier Review Committee
  • Achieve Level IV Certification in the USC Advisor Training Program
  • Shadowing of at least 1 Academic Coaching appointment
  • Shadowing of 2 Advising Administrators (one in an academic college/school, one in the University Advising Center,
  • Observe at least 2 Undergraduate Academic Advisors and provide feedback on appointment observed 
  • Reflection Questions 

Apply for Tier IV Advancement

Undergraduate Academic Advisor III's who meet the requirements above should complete the online application for advancement to an Advisor IV.
