Boren Awards – Campus Deadline January 6
Attention graduate students interested in working for the federal government: applications for the Boren Awards are open.
The Boren program funds eligible U.S. citizen graduate students in all programs and degree types to undertake intensive language study abroad and provides preparation for internationally focused careers in the federal government.
Last year over 40% of graduate student applicants received the fellowship.
About the Boren program
- The Boren Fellowship is open to U.S. citizens who are graduate students in all disciplines.
- Provides up to $30,000 to spend a semester or year abroad studying one of more than 60 critical need languages.
- No previous language experience required.
- Advanced graduate students are encouraged to conduct research in addition to their intensive language study.
- Fellowship recipients commit to work for at least one year for a federal agency.
- Fellows have gone on to careers in the Departments of State, Homeland Security, Defense, and Commerce as well as intelligence agencies, USAID, and more!

University 101 is accepting applications for new instructors for Fall 2025. Prospective instructors should submit the new instructor application, along with a cover letter and resume.

- master's degree or higher from an accredited institution (official transcript required)
- status as a full-time university employee, retiree of USC Columbia, or Ph.D. student

Critical Language Scholarship – Due November 19
The Critical Language Scholarship provides eligible students in all degree programs the opportunity to participate in a fully funded intensive summer language program.
CLS exists to encourage U.S. citizens to study one of 12 languages. Many languages require no previous study to apply. Eligible graduate students looking to develop language skills for research or future career plans should apply.
About the program:
- 8-10 week fully funded intensive summer language programs hosted at sites abroad
- Provides equivalent of one year of language study
- Study one of 12 critical-need languages:
- Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu
Who should apply:

Program Assistant to Graduate Teaching Assistant Training Program Manager, Center for Teaching Excellence
We are seeking a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) Program Assistant to support the GTA Training Program Manager. This role involves 5-10 hours per week, depending on the student’s current employment status in other departments, with a pay rate of $15/hour for Fall 2024, with the possibility of extension through Spring 2025. Please note that no tuition assistance or benefits will be offered. The projected start date is Monday, October 21st, 2024.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the GTA/IA Training Program Manager in managing the GRAD 701 Teaching Assistant Development course on Blackboard, including grading student reflection assignments and maintaining a database of student participation data and feedback.
- Perform a range of administrative, clerical, technical, and service tasks to support the GTA/IA Training Program.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree or enrollment in a Master’s degree program at USC.
- At least one semester of teaching or instructional assistant experience (GTA/IA) or equivalent.
- Completion of the GRAD 701 Teaching Assistant Development course (or equivalent).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, and Blackboard.
- Ability to follow directions, take initiative, and work collaboratively.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Excellent professional judgment and discretion.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree with coursework or demonstrated interest in higher education pedagogy or a related field.

Job Description
The Graduate School is seeking a highly motivated and skilled data analyst to join our team, focusing on data cleaning, analysis, and visualization across a variety of data projects. This position is not limited to graduate students and will play a crucial role in supporting the Graduate School's efforts to make data-driven decisions and to communicate complex data in an accessible way to a broad audience. Projects will include but are not limited to analysis of funding, career outcomes, and admissions data.
Key Responsibilities
Data Cleaning and Preparation: Clean and prepare large datasets for analysis. Identify and correct errors or inconsistencies, deal with missing values, and ensure data integrity.
Data Analysis: Perform statistical analyses to uncover trends, correlations, and patterns in data related to graduate funding, career outcomes, admissions, and other relevant areas. Preferred: ability to use advanced statistical techniques and models to predict trends and outcomes.
Data Visualization: Create compelling and informative visualizations of data findings for both technical and non-technical audiences utilizing tools such as Tableau to develop dashboards, graphs, and charts that effectively communicate complex data insights.
Collaboration: Work closely with The Graduate School recruiters, program coordinators, and other staff members to ensure data needs are met and findings are integrated into decision-making processes. Participate in meetings and provide data support as needed.
Data Governance and Ethics: Ensure all data management practices comply with university policies and ethical standards, including data privacy and security guidelines.
Project Management: Assist in the planning and execution of data-related projects. Ensure projects are completed on time and within scope, coordinating efforts across different departments when necessary.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience with data cleaning, and analysis tools and techniques.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and translate findings into actionable insights.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present data in a clear and compelling manner.

Graduate Staff Assistant (GSA) positions are available for the Fall 2024 semester
Duties
As directed by the Operations Manager, the graduate assistant (GA) will assist in setting up manikins, equipment, and supplies for various skills labs and simulation events. When the labs or simulation events are concluded the GA will break down the stations, clean the equipment as needed, and report any equipment malfunction or deterioration to the Operations Manager. The GA will also be responsible for understanding how the lab's A/V equipment and patient simulators are turned on and off and how to appropriately use the equipment. Other duties by the GA include but are not limited to stocking supplies, managing the flow of simulation activities, making sure the lab is kept neat (beds made, trash picked up or recycled), updating, organizing, and printing data files related to scenarios, and role-playing in scenarios.
Time Commitment
10 or 20 hours per week, varies by faculty member. Some individual hours are set based on the faculty member’s teaching schedule – commonly Mondays, Wednesdays and/or Fridays. Rest of weekly hours are flexible based on the GIA’s schedule. Period of employment matches the academic calendar. GIA will need to be available through the end of each semester’s exam period. This position is located in the College of Nursing’s Clinical Education Building in West Columbia, a 15-minute drive from our downtown campus.
Qualifications
Must have already attended or be able to attend the required GTA/GIA Workshops hosted by the Center for Teaching Excellence and register for GRAD 701, a seminar course of professional development. These are one-time required trainings for various types of assistantship position. Information is available on the Center for Teaching Excellence website.
Benefits
This position will qualify the GIA for in-state tuition.
