University 101 Programs

Become a U101 Instructor

Classes are taught by faculty and staff members and administrators at the University of South Carolina who are committed to first-year student education, learning and success.

Requirements

  • master's degree or higher from an accredited institution
    • note: we can consider full-time staff members with a bachelors degree if they have substantial student contact as part of their primary responsibilities. 
  • status as a full-time university employee, retiree of USC Columbia, or Ph.D. student
  • completion of the Teaching Experience Workshop
  • approval by the instructor's supervisor or department chair
  • approval by the director of University 101 Programs
  • participate in regular professional development opportunities offered by University 101 Programs

Instructor Renewals

Renewal decisions are based on two additional criteria:

  • participation in advanced faculty development activities
  • satisfactory student evaluations.

How Do I Apply?

Application Process
We are now accepting applications for fall 2025. Please submit a New Instructor Application, current resume, and cover letter to our office at the Carolina Coliseum, Suite 1000 or to Dr. Dan Friedman at friedman@sc.edu. Your cover letter should address the reason for your interest, fit for working with first-year students, and any relevant teaching or facilitation experience.

After Applying
Competitive applicants will be invited to meet with the Assistant Vice President for University 101 Programs & the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition to discuss the opportunity to teach the course, preferences regarding workshop dates, and next steps in the process.
