Specializing in the field

A Home for Political Science
Political science has deep roots at the University of South Carolina, even predating
the program’s founding in 1937. Francis Lieber, the first scholar in the United States
to assume the title Professor of Political Science, was a member of the South Carolina
College faculty from 1835-1856. Located on the historic Horseshoe, Lieber College
commemorates its namesake for his work to establish the field of political science.
Students can choose from a variety of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We encourage undergraduates to develop their interests and aspirations through a wide variety of course offerings and beyond the classroom experiences. Graduate students are able to gain the knowledge and skills needed to successfully pursue their interests in professional careers related to international studies, in public administration and policy or in our Ph.D. program.
