Family Weekend 2024 is September 19-21, and we’re excited to host parents of students in the College of Arts and Sciences. We’re planning a variety of events including a panel about careers, a blacksmithing demonstration and, as always our stargazing at Melton Observatory.

From Major to Career: The Value of an Arts & Sciences Degree

Both students and parents /family members are welcome to attend this event!
Join Christy Friend, senior associate dean for undergraduate studies, and other leaders from the College of Arts & Sciences and the USC Career Center for a discussion about how an education in the liberal arts and sciences prepares students with the skills employers are looking for in today’s evolving, global economy. Hear about the exciting range of career paths recent graduates are pursuing and learn about what your student can do in and outside the classroom to enhance their academic and job market success. Afterwards, join us for a meet-and-greet session where you will have an opportunity to talk with the dean and associate deans, career readiness staff, and our Arts and Sciences student ambassadors.
Art Exhibition
Drop in 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., McMaster Gallery
View unique, imaginative drawings in “The Dog Show: Time Traveler Umeyama's Drawings from the 21st Century,” an imaginative art exhibition by Hiromi Stringer. The art imagines modern dog breeds through the eyes of a fictional time traveler from 1850s Japan.
Blacksmithing Demonstration
10 a.m. – 12 p.m., McMaster College,
Join Professor Thomas Bosse to learn how SVAD students use the blacksmithing yard to create unique works of art. Bosse and students will offer fun demonstrations as they forge hooks and tools.
Behind-the-Scenes Museum Tour
11 a.m., McKissick Museum
Get a rare glimpse of southern history with a behind-the-scenes tour of items in the McKissick Museum collection, ranging from clothing and toys to furniture and tools. While you're there, feel free to tour exhibitions on the evolution of USC's mascot, artifacts from Cameroon and the protest art of Shepard Fairey.
Counting to Infinity: An Introduction to Math at USC
12:30 – 1:30 p.m., Leconte 108
Learn about novel research in mathematics and the research opportunities available to students. Faculty and students also will share how USC is developing programs in mathematics and data science.
Dive into Research
2 – 3:30 p.m., Jones Physical Science Room 104
Meet faculty and students from the School of the Earth, Ocean and Environment as you tour active research projects and laboratories where we study a variety of environmental issues.
Lecture on Cameroonian Art
3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., McKissick Museum Theatre, First Floor
Abbe Schriber, an art history professor in the Department of African American Studies and School of Visual Art and Design, will present a contemporary perspective on the Cameroonian art in the McKissick Museum's collection and discuss how contemporary artists are reclaiming and embracing African arts as part of their ancestral heritage.
Women's History Jeopardy
3:45 – 4:30 p.m., Close-Hipp Room 502
Come and test your knowledge of women's history with answers and questions in the format of the popular quiz show "Jeopardy!" Prizes will be available!
Pop Culture History Trivia Battle
4 p.m., Gambrell 250
Join the Department of History in a fun-but-fierce trivia battle to test your knowledge of pop culture throughout the ages! We’ll ask questions about celebrities, sports, movies, music, books, art, television and more, including events and trends familiar to both students and parents. Teams and individual trivia fans welcome!
Stargazing
8:30 – 10:30 p.m., Melton Observatory (weather permitting)
Line up for one of the college's most popular Family Weekend events. Faculty and students from the Department of Physics and Astronomy will set up telescopes for visitors to enjoy.
