Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures

Graduate Student Travel Policies and Health Insurance

The Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures (LLC) encourages Graduate Students to present papers at professional meetings. Therefore, Students must also apply to the DLLC and to the Graduate School for funds to offset travel costs. Given limited departmental funding, individual awards cannot be expected to cover all expenses.

The following are guidelines for the procedure to be followed when applying for travel funds. In order not to miss application deadlines, you must apply for funds as soon as you have submitted an abstract to the conference, pending notification of acceptance. If funds are awarded and your paper is declined, the awarded funds will be returned to the travel funds pool.

STEP ONE:
Complete the travel worksheet and  absence  from campus form . Once completed, submit the forms to the DLLC Graduate Office for a signature. The form is then sent to the Chair's Office for approval.

STEP TWO:
Once the Chair has acted on your request and allocated departmental funds for the purpose, you can consider seeking funds from the Graduate School. PLEASE INFORM YOURSELF OF GRADUATE SCHOOL DEADLINES.  Note that the Graduate School only funds two trips per student during their tenure at UofSC. Please apply for their funds wisely.

The Graduate School has revised its procedures. All applications for travel grants must include the following three forms:

  1. Travel Grant Program Nomination G-TG1
  2. Travel Grant Advisor Recommendation G-TG2
  3. Travel Grant Student Request G-TG3

Please visit the following website in order to apply for a travel grant. Be sure to follow the directions carefully.

Please note that the Graduate School maximum awards will be $500 for national and $1,000 for international travel. The student’s presentation must be officially recognized by the sponsoring organization. Requests to support travel to regional meetings will not be considered.

At every stage of application process, please keep the Graduate Director updated. Be sure to note all application deadlines, and GIVE YOUR RECOMMENDERS AT LEAST TWO WEEKS TO WRITE LETTERS OF SUPPORT.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
