Successful applicants will generally hold a BA degree in literature or related subject, and have achieved graduate level competence in at least one foreign language.

• 3.0 GPA in your undergraduate major and a 3.5 GPA in graduate course work.
• Significant course work in at least one foreign language
• Minimum of 480 on  the verbal and 4.0 on the analytical sections of the GRE (400 and 3.5 for nonnative speakers).
• For GRE tests taken after August 2011, you should have a minimum of 153 on the verbal and 4.0 on the analytical sections of the GRE (146 and 3.5 for nonnative speakers).

Successful candidates should have: 

• Completed or be close to completing an undergraduate degree in the language you wish to study
• Minimum of 153 on  the verbal and 4.0 on the analytical sections of the GRE (146 and 3.5 for nonnative speakers).
• For GRE tests taken after August 2011, you should have a minimum of 500 on the verbal and analytical sections (400 and 400 for nonnative speakers).

• hold a B.A. in Spanish from an accredited college or university
• Under the discretion of the graduate director, graduates of foreign universities where Spanish is the official language may be able to substitute this experience for a B.A.
• Minimum of 153 on the verbal and 4.0 on the analytical sections of the GRE (146 and 3.5 for nonnative speakers).
• Academic writing sample of approximately 2,500 words, written in Spanish (or English for students whose native language is Spanish
• 1-2-page statement of purpose describing pervious academic work related to Spanish, relevant practical experience, intended specialization or research interest, career goals
• Non-native Spanish speakers are required to submit a 5-minute sample of spoken Spanish. Non-native English speakers must do the same in English. Files should be in an .mp3 format.

Students must have an M.A. degree in Spanish or related fields of study. A total of 30 credit hours may be approved toward the Ph.D. The Spanish Graduate Advisor is responsible for the approval of credit hours, and for designing individual programs of study.

Students may be admitted directly into the Ph.D. program. These students should have a B.A. degree in Spanish or in related fields of study.

Students with a degree in related fields of study may need to take a Proficiency Exam in order to show their verbal, writing and reading skills in Spanish. Exceptions may be granted when the applicant/student's first language is Spanish.

We partner with the Department of Education to offer a Masters of Teaching program in French, German and Spanish. Successful applicants should have: 

• 3 letters of recommendation
• Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores
• Official transcripts
• Personal statement
• Resume
• Writing sample (Should be in the language applied for)
