State Insurance Benefits
The State of South Carolina offers health, dental and vision care, as well as life insurance, long-term disability coverage and pre-tax flexible benefits.
Each employee's needs are different. We offer state insurance plans as well other benefits offered outside the State PEBA system to meet the needs of you and your family.
The State of South Carolina offers health, dental and vision care, as well as life insurance, long-term disability coverage and pre-tax flexible benefits.
To supplement state coverage, the University of South Carolina offers universal life/long-term care benefits, as well as short-term disability, critical illness, accident, auto and home insurance.
Different rules may apply to employees who transfer their employment to the University of South Carolina from another state agency or who have retired from a previous position at USC or from another state agency.
Employees transferring from another PEBA-participating employer cannot amend state retirement or insurance benefits unless a special eligibility situation occurs simultaneously with the transfer to the university.
Transfer employees and their previous employer must complete:
New Employee Transfer of Benefits Form [pdf]
New Employee Transfer of Leave Form [pdf]
To expedite the transfer process, please make your former employer aware of the transfer to USC as this could cause a delay in PEBA’s benefits being active at the university. A copy of PEBA’s Summary of Termination form could be forward to your campus HR office. For the Columbia campus, please send the USC Transfer Employee and Summary of Termination forms to benefits@mailbox.sc.edu as the transfer is not automatic.
Employees who have retired from the University of South Carolina may be subject to additional requirements including a rehire waiting period, retirement system contribution requirements, insurance benefits, and earnings limitations.
If you retired from USC, or any other state agency, please review our guidance for retirees returning to work and HR Policy 2.02 [pdf].
