Going Garnet, Choosing First-Generation
The Housing application is open from February 15 until May 3, which allows plenty of time to complete the Housing application. Be sure to take your time and be thoughtful in your answers to the supplemental application questions. These questions are reviewed by the Faculty Director and determine which students are selected into the First-Generation LLC.
Once you have been accepted to First-Gen LLC, you will have the opportunity in June to select your room via the online room selection process.

The First-Generation Living and Learning Community (LLC) provides an inclusive space
where students can engage in intellectual exchange and conversation. The LLC fosters a sense
of belonging in an environment where individuals of all identities, unique backgrounds,
and experiences are believed, cared for, and feel empowered to advance social change.
Mission Statement
The mission of the First-Generation Living & Learning Community is to empower first-gen
students by fostering a supportive empowered residential community that provides personalized
opportunities for academic, civic, social, and career success. We achieve this through
meaningful relationships with faculty and staff, tailored programming, intentional mentorship
and resources, and access to experiential learning opportunities.
Take Classes With Your Peers
The University of South Carolina created the University 101 classes to help make the transition to college life as smooth as possible for first-year students. You will learn a lot of useful skills for acclimating to your new life and, with special sections taught in the Maxcy Classroom, you'll have an unmatched opportunity to meet other First-Gen Living and Learning Community students.
