From clubs hosted by our department to internship opportunities that match your goals, you’ll go further in your education by taking your learning beyond the classroom. We also have regular gatherings where you can meet peers in the department and network with people from the community.
Statistics club and Mu Sigma Rho
The Department of Statistics hosts two student organizations open to undergraduate and graduate students. You’ll connect with other students who enjoy statistics and learn about job and internship opportunities.
- The statistics club is led by statistics department students and is a cornerstone of the statistics, data science and data analytics community on campus. Open to all students at USC.
- Mu Sigma Rho is the national honorary society for statistics, and the South Carolina Beta chapter is hosted by USC. Advanced students may apply for membership.

Internships, mentorship and research
You can gain hands-on experience in statistics in a variety of ways. From researching a theoretical principle to putting your skills to work as an intern, you can go further in your education and set yourself up for a promising career by taking initiative.
Here are a few ways to get started:
- Talk with your academic advisor.
As a statistics major, you’ll have an advisor who is well-versed in opportunities available and in line with your interests and goals. - Find a faculty mentor.
Your professors are happy to connect you with research, either on your own or as part of a research group. - Apply for a Magellan Scholarship.
The Magellan Scholar program provides funds and mentorship for student research at the undergraduate level. - Consider the Carolina Internship Program through the Career Center.
Seminars and guest lectures
Learn about research happening on campus and around the world. Our informal seminars and the annual Palmetto Lecture series present talks by our faculty and graduate students, visiting academic researchers and members of the business community.
