Personal One-on-One Advising
Students are assigned to an UAA at the beginning of their first semester, and remain with that advisor until graduation. Students are required to meet with their academic advisor at least twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall for formal advisement for registration. All students must be advised prior to registration for their academic hold to be removed.
- Advisement for the Fall semester typically begins in February and lasts throughout the summer.
- Advisement for the Spring semester typically begins in September and lasts throughout the winter.

You can view your advisor's information (detailed instructions here) on your registration checklist in Self-Service Carolina or by viewing your degree audit in DegreeWorks.
Prior to the advisement period, your advisor should be in touch via email with instructions on how to sign up for an advising appointment. You can also email your advisor to ask about setting up an appointment.
Yes. The system will not allow you to register for classes until the hold on your registration has been lifted. The Undergraduate Office will lift your hold after you have been advised. If there are extenuating circumstances and you are unable to meet with an advisor in person (e.g., if you are studying abroad), email your advisor to arrange an alternative, like advisement via email or virtual video chat (Microsoft Teams).
To get the most out of advising, it’s essential to prepare before you arrive to your advising appointment. Use the Pre-Advisement Checklist to prepare for your advising appointment.
While it only takes one advisor to lift your registration hold, it is highly recommended that you meet with advisors for both disciplines to ensure you are progressing correctly. Requirements for each major are different, and it’s in your best interest to speak with advisors who are familiar with your major requirements.
The semester before you plan to graduate, or once you’ve completed 90 credit hours and are in your last year of academic study, you are required to request a Senior Check from the CAS Office of Undergraduate Studies (Flinn Hall). To request a Senior Check, either you or your advisor will upload your Major Program Card to the College of Arts and Sciences Forms System . A Senior Check is a review of your transcript, your degree programs course requirements, and your Major Program Card. This is meant to provide you with a list of courses that you will still need to complete. If you make any changes to what courses your advisors indicate you need to take, you may not graduate in the semester you have planned.
The graduation application is the first step you will need to take to graduate from your academic program. Complete the online graduation application in my.sc.edu. The Apply to Graduate link is located under the ‘Student’ tab in the bottom right corner of the page. During the application process, you will be asked to verify your program, name, and diploma mailing address. Students expecting to graduate should apply early, based upon your campus or academic unit deadlines. Please note an application submission does not guarantee your approval for candidacy. All students who apply for graduation will receive a follow-up email with their initial approval or disapproval to participate in the commencement activities
For further information on dates and frequently asked questions about commencement, please visit the Registrar’s website.
Students must complete a cognate (12 hours) or a minor (18 hours) as part of this program. In lieu of a cognate or minor, an additional major may be added to a student’s program of study. Additional majors must include all major courses as well as any prescribed courses noted (*) in the bulletin. Prescribed courses noted in the bulletin may be shared with Carolina Core, College requirements, and Program requirements in the primary program. You may declare a minor during your advisement appointment or by emailing your advisor. See the Undergraduate Bulletin for a complete list of available minors.
Review the Undergraduate Grade Forgiveness Policy carefully before submitting the required request form online.
Most commonly, it is the case that closed sections whether in person or online have a strict capacity. If this is a PSYC course, please complete the department override request form or contact your advisor. If this is a non-PSYC course, you will need to follow up with the department. Please refer to the Override/Seat Notification Requests webpage for more information.
If you wish to change your major, you will need to schedule an appointment with the Exploratory Advising team. Each major has its own set of GPA and/or credit hour requirements that you must meet to change your major. See if you meet requirements for a new major, view upcoming change of major deadlines, and familiarize yourself with how to change your major using the Change of Major Requirements Table.
To find your registration appointment time, go to Self Service Carolina and login. Click on the "Student" button and select the "Registration" box. You must be advised prior to registration. You will not be cleared to register for courses until you are advised.

Transient work must be passed with a grade of C or higher. Other restrictions may apply, you will need to clarify with your advisor.
