The Rise Scholarship is for young leaders who will help South Carolina rise to its potential. It is especially for first-generation students from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups.

About Clementa C. Pinckney

The Honorable Reverend Clementa Pinckney was a pastor and political leader who inspired people statewide and beyond.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Allen University and a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina College of Arts and Sciences. At 23, he became the youngest African American ever elected to the South Carolina legislature, and he served in the House of Representatives and the Senate for a combined 19 years. He was the pastor of Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. He was killed in the tragic shooting at the church in 2015, but he left a legacy of public service and passion for the people of South Carolina.

This scholarship is so important because it ensures that my father's legacy is carried out for generations to come by stressing the importance of education and community service in South Carolina.

— Eliana Pinckney
