University 101 Programs

Ph.D. Students Interested in Becoming U101 Instructors

Ph.D. students who teach University 101 at the University of South Carolina will have the opportunity to impact first-year student education, learning, and success while gaining teaching experience in a structured and supportive environment.

How Do I Apply?

Application Process
We are now accepting applications for fall 2025. Please submit a New Instructor Application, current resume/CV, and cover letter to our office at the Carolina Coliseum, Suite 1000 or to Dr. Dan Friedman at friedman@sc.edu. Your cover letter should address the reason for your interest, fit for working with first-year students, and any relevant teaching or facilitation experience.

Please note that students with graduate assistantships of more than 10 hours are not eligible for this position. 

After Applying
Competitive applicants will be invited to meet with the Assistant Vice President for University 101 Programs & the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition to discuss the opportunity to teach the course, preferences regarding workshop dates, and next steps in the process. 


Requirements for Ph.D. Students

To teach University 101, applicants must have a master's degree. Successful applicants will also need to complete the three-day Teaching Experience Workshop, which will be offered on:

  • January 7-9, 2025
  • February 7, 14, and 21, 2025
  • March 11-13, 2025
  • May 13-15, 2025

University 101 Instructors are also required to participate in regular professional development opportunities offered by University 101 Programs.
