About Cochlear Implants
Approximately 38 million Americans experience significant hearing loss, with about
11 million having profound or complete hearing loss. Cochlear implants are the most
effective neural prostheses, currently benefiting one million users worldwide. A cochlear implant is an advanced, small electronic device surgically implanted
to bypass damaged parts of the inner ear and directly stimulate the surviving auditory
nerve fibers in the inner ear. The device comprises an external speech processor and
an internally implanted electrode array. It picks up, processes, and transmits sound,
enabling users to perceive environmental sounds. While cochlear implants do not restore
natural hearing, they provide representations of sounds that significantly aid in
speech understanding and production.
