Background
Richard Schulz, Ph.D., has led a long and distinguished career as a scholar, researcher and exemplary teacher, with 30 years of service on faculty at the College of Pharmacy, following four years at West Virginia University.
Schulz has been extensively involved in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and mentoring students and junior faculty. He was named Teacher of the Year by the college in 2001 as well as Researcher of the Year in 1999 and 2007. Schulz has more than 30 years of experience as an investigator, examining questions about medication adherence, patient quality of life and the impact of pharmacist interventions. Prior to his academic positions, he was a practicing pharmacist in both hospital and community settings.
Schulz has participated in externally funded field studies that implemented community-based interventions and assessed medication-taking behavior and patient outcomes, including hospitalization and emergency department utilization. For instance, one of his studies focused on diabetes management in an underserved population. He has collaborated extensively with the Office for the Study of Aging at the Arnold School of Public Health, where he serves as adjunct professor.
