Background
Randall "Randy" C. Rowen, Pharm.D., dean emeritus of the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy, dedicated 23 years to the institution, significantly advancing pharmacy education and practice.
Dr. Rowen joined the College of Pharmacy in 1986 as a clinical assistant professor and later served as chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice. He served as dean from 2005-2016, during which time the University of South Carolina and Medical University of South Carolina operated as a merged pharmacy program, the South Carolina College of Pharmacy, until the respective boards of trustees voted in 2015 to pursue independent accreditation. His tenure as dean on the Columbia campus was marked by a commitment to integrating innovative practices into the curriculum and fostering collaborative initiatives.
Dr. Rowen’s pharmacy experience spans geriatric and internal medicine, including roles at the WJB Dorn VA Hospital, Richland Memorial Hospital, James F. Byrnes Center for Geriatric Medicine, Education, and Research and the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute. Recognized for his contributions, Dr. Rowen has received numerous honors and awards, including the Upjohn Pharmacy Research Award in 1988. His dedication to the field has left an enduring impact on the college and the broader pharmacy community.
