Preparing Graduates for the Global Marketplace

Combined with the international expertise of our functional departments, the Sonoco International Business Department provides the Moore School with unparalleled competence in the critical area of the conduct of business across national boundaries and diverse cultures. The department emphasizes understanding cross-border inter- and intra-organizational relationships comprising the modern multinational enterprise, as well as the institutional, financial, sociocultural and sociopolitical contexts within which the multinational enterprise is embedded. While our faculty is unified by this interest, we approach issues from a wide variety of disciplinary bases. Building on this diversity, we are particularly interested in understanding international business phenomena from multidisciplinary and multilevel perspectives.

The department offers an undergraduate international business major that has been consistently ranked as No. 1 by U.S. News & World Report. The department also offers a highly regarded international business major at the doctoral level and contributes extensively to the international master's and executive programs of the Moore School. The department’s commitment to excellence in the classroom is evidenced by the faculty’s numerous outstanding teacher awards at all levels.

The department has been ranked as one of the most prolific international business research departments. Department members played a lead role in the Moore School’s becoming one of the five original recipients of a major grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to establish a Center for International Business Education and Research. Faculty members are extensively involved in CIBER-sponsored international programs and research and continue to provide leadership to the center. The department also houses the Folks Center for International Business, which engages with multinational companies, international organizations and academic partners to identify and analyze the major international issues that impact strategy, risk and innovation, workforce needs and leadership skills.
