Joseph F. Rice School of Law

William Raffone

Why did you choose USC Rice School of Law?

I chose to come to South Carolina Law because I want to be a judge one day, and South Carolina is best suited for that dream. Twenty-five percent of the graduates of this institution go on to clerk for a judge, and being located in the capital city provides many networking opportunities with legislatures, attorneys, and judges in the area.

What advice would you give a first-year law student?

This is a common cliche but treat law school like a 9-5 job. Show up before classes start, do your reading, and stay afterwards to do your readings for the next day. If you do this, you'll have to do little on the weekends until exam season, and you can have a life outside of school. The difference between a lot and little stress is often how good you are at time management and organizing. Work hard when you need to so you can enjoy the small amounts of free time you will have.

What is an accomplishment in law school that you are very proud of?

I am very proud to have made the mock trial team here at South Carolina Law! Depending on which ranking system you use, we are the fifth or sixth best advocacy program in the country. I am learning so much from fellow bar members and coaches, and these skills will translate seamlessly into employment. I look forward to competing with them, and hopefully, winning!
