Graduate Applicants

Do you want to study in a highly-ranked program where you can conduct hands-on, interdisciplinary research? With a highly ranked doctoral program, a social psychology specialty that's ranked fourth and a highly respected research faculty, the sociology program at University of South Carolina is a great choice.

The Department of Sociology annually accepts approximately 10 graduate students out of a pool of roughly 30 applicants.

Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the Graduate School's requirements, our department has some additional admission requirements.

  • If you're entering with an undergrad degree, we require a GPA of 3.2 on a 4 point scale for the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate work.
  • If you're entering with a master's degree, we require a GPA of 3.5 on a 4 point scale for all graduate work. 
  • GRE scores in the 70th percentile or above increase the likelihood you'll be admitted and funded. 
  • We also consider how well your interests fit with our faculty's. 

 

Funding

You'll be considered for funding as soon as you're admitted to the program. Most students receive funding through department assistantships. If you receive funding this way, you'll begin as a teaching assistant and progress to teaching your own courses in the later part of your degree. We also fund students through faculty research grants and various graduate fellowships. You can explore all your funding options on the Graduate School website.
