Students who have an interest in law enforcement careers can participate in our Campus Safety Officer Program.

The selection process is very thorough and can take several months.

Campus Safety Officer Program

The Campus Safety Officer (CSO) Program gives students with an interest in law enforcement an opportunity to work in a non-sworn capacity while enrolled at the University of South Carolina. Their primary mission is to enforce university policies, while serving as additional eyes and ears for police officers, which increases safety for university students, staff, faculty and visitors. The current pay rate is $20/hour ($18/hour during summer sessions), up to 20 hours a week for student employees.

Requirements & Training

To be eligible for employment, CSOs must complete a lengthy application process and meet standards similar to those required by police officers. Those selected may undergo training to include:

  • Enforcement procedures
  • Report writing
  • Legal issues
  • Verbal communication
  • Defensive tactics
  • Bicycle class
  • Health and wellness training
  • Student judicial programs

Exclusions

Are there any exclusions that would prohibit me from becoming a CSO?

  • No use of marijuana illegally in the previous 12 months;
  • No cocaine or other illegal drug use in the past 2 years;
  • No felony conviction or other conviction for a crime carrying a term of imprisonment of more than 1 year;
  • No conviction of Criminal Domestic Violence;
  • No conviction of DUI or leaving the scene of a collision in past 5 years;
  • No illegal transfer of alcohol to a minor in past 1 year.
