Professional Standards
Accreditation provides law enforcement agencies with an opportunity to voluntarily pursue excellence through an established set of professional standards, which require comprehensive and uniform written directives; a commitment to continuous training and testing; reports and analyses to make informed decisions; preparedness to address critical incidents; community relationship building; and continuous independent review by subject matter experts.
The University of South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement and Safety (Division) holds four (4) active accreditations with three (3) separate accreditation bodies. Those accreditation bodies are the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA), and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation (SCLEA). The Division was first accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in 1996 and has consistently maintained accreditation since 2016. The Division currently maintains two active accreditations with CALEA for both the Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation and the Public Safety Communications Accreditation.
The Division of Law Enforcement and Safety’s commitment to excellence, integrity, accountability, and human life is exemplified in its adherence to practices rooted in the gold standard of public safety. The standards and practices connected to these accreditations represent the highest professional standards for campus law enforcement and public safety. The Division is one of only four (4) campus-based law enforcement agencies in the United States that is accredited with IACLEA and with CALEA for both law enforcement and public safety communications.
