About

The Department of Theatre and Dance includes two of the university's most vibrant programs. Our faculty and students, who earn a strong liberal arts undergraduate education or highly specialized graduate degrees, showcase their talents onstage for the public through annual performance seasons, and educational conservatories and workshops.

About the Theatre Program

Our theatre program offers undergraduate students the B.A. degree in theatre, and, at the graduate level, the M.F.A. degree in acting, design, or directing, as well as the interdisciplinary M.A. and M.A.T (Master of Arts in Teaching) degrees in theatre. USC is home to the only M.F.A. program in theatre in South Carolina.  The university is one of a select group of nationally recognized programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST).  Our program additionally holds membership in the University/Resident Theatre Association (U/RTA)

The department's theatre production program is an extension of classroom teaching. Just as important, our theatre program stages literature that serves the liberal arts mission of USC. Each year, the program produces a season of performances which the public can enjoy.

About the Betsy Blackmon Dance Program

Our dance program combines a rigorous dance classroom and studio environment with the depth and breadth of an excellent liberal arts education. Working from a solid foundational core of dance courses, undergraduate students have the option of developing additional competencies with an emphasis in either Performance and Choreography or Dance Education K-12 Certification. At the graduate level, we offer SC's only MA in Dance Studies.  The university is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).

The Betsy Blackmon Betsy Blackmon Dance Program presents an annual season of performances that strive to inspire, entertain and achieve ever greater heights of artistic excellence. From traditional and avant-garde choreography to timeless classical treasures, our season showcases the artistry and artists of our program.  We regularly bring in well-known guest artists for residencies, during which they stage major pieces or create work on our dancers. Original works by our faculty are also regularly created for (and with) our dancers.  In addition, students have the opportunity to stage their own choreography.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
