Study Abroad

Studying abroad in England isn't just the opportunity to deepen your historical knowledge. The experience has given our students lasting friendships, new perspectives on the world, and even lead them to pursue international careers.

University of South Carolina-University of Warwick Exchange

The University of South Carolina-University of Warwick Exchange has been in continuous existence since 1966. It is the oldest and one of the most prestigious exchange programs at the University of South Carolina, and over 120 USC history students have studied at the University of Warwick. Warwick Scholars benefit from a year abroad at one of the UK's top-ranked history departments and in the School of Comparative American Studies. They return to USC with heightened academic skills and an appreciation of what it is like to live and work in a different culture.

The Sherman F. Smith Jr. Memorial Scholarship

The Sherman F. Smith, Jr. Memorial Scholarships provide generous scholarship amounts to support USC students at Warwick. Thanks to a generous gift from our alumni, we now have an endowment of over $1 million to help you study abroad for the same amount—or less than—a year at Carolina.

When you apply to the exchange program, you'll automatically be considered for this scholarship.

How to Apply

In addition to filling out the standard application form at the Study Abroad Office, you'll need to write a 1,000 word personal statement. The statement should:

  • explain to the reader why you want to study at Warwick and what you hope to accomplish as an exchange student. You might discuss your interests in history and your preparation for studying history in Great Britain. In what ways do you expect studying at Warwick to differ from USC, and how do you plan to handle those differences?
  • convince the selection committee that you are a person of intellectual curiosity and ability who would benefit from the History Department's exchange with Warwick University.

Please turn in your statement at the Study Abroad Office, Close-Hipp Suite 453 (the old business school building).

 Application Deadlines

All applications and personal statements should be turned in to the Study Abroad Office.
