Internships
Internships can be an important asset to your overall educational experience. Internship experiences provide hands-on experience in a professional setting, bringing to life concepts and ideas learned in the classroom. Internships are an important way to build your resume and to familiarize yourself with career options. In some cases, internships can lead to full-time employment after graduation.
The Department of Geography supports a robust internship program that connects undergraduate
students with our community partners. Our program offers 3–6 hours of academic credit
to majors and non-majors through GEOG 595. Our current partners include the Audubon
Society, the A.C. Moore Herbarium, the Historic Columbia Foundation, the Gills Creek
Watershed Association, the National Weather Service Forecast Office, and the SC Forestry
Commission (among others). Our community partners may post internship positions that
require specific skills; or students may take the lead by contacting a partner and
suggesting a project. Students interested in doing an internship should view our internship information page.
Careers
The Geography undergraduate program combines a traditional liberal arts education, emphasizing reasoning, analysis, and critical-thinking skills, with a thorough overview of geographic concepts and techniques. With their boundless curiosity and their broad training in environmental science, social science, and digital technologies, geographers find myriad career opportunities in government, industry, and non-profit sectors. Some geographers find specialized employment as cartographers, remote-sensing specialists, climatologists, and geographic information systems analysts. Others work in sectors like disaster and emergency management, urban and community planning, and environmental management. Still others find success in fields like international business, real estate, insurance, public administration, and international development.
