Placement Testing

To ensure you start your academic journey in the courses best suited to your current skills, all new students are required to complete placement assessments before meeting with an academic advisor.

Why are these tests required?

Placement tests are not "entrance exams" for admission; instead, they measure your current knowledge in specific subjects. Your scores help your advisor place you in a level where you will be challenged but not overwhelmed, setting the foundation for your long-term success.

Key Assessment Areas

  • Mathematics (ALEKS): Most students must complete the ALEKS PPL assessment. This determines which level math course is the right starting point for your major.

  • Foreign Language: If you have prior experience with a language (like Spanish or French), you can choose to take a placement exam. This ensures you aren't repeating material you already know.

Important Tips for Success

  1. Check Your Exemptions: If you have high enough AP/IB scores or have completed dual enrollment college credits, you may be exempt from certain tests. Always verify this with the Enrollment Services Center.

  2. Complete Early: You should aim to finish all required assessments at least one week prior to your scheduled appointment.

  3. Use Your USC Credentials: You will typically access these tests through Blackboard using your University network username and password.

  4. Hardware Requirements: Most math assessments require a laptop or desktop with a webcam for proctoring. Tablets and cellphones are generally not supported.
