Elected to Congress in 1974, Derrick represented northwestern South Carolina's Third District from 1975 to 1995 and rose to serve as Chief Deputy Majority Whip before retiring from office in 1994.

Collection Finding Aid
The collection chiefly documents Derrick's representation of South Carolina's Third District in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1975-1995, and his roles in the Democratic leadership, including his role as Chief Deputy Majority Whip, as well as his service on the Budget Committee and the Rules Committee.  Topical files include material on the Savannah River Site and the Richard B. Russell Dam, as well as the textiles industry.  The collection also includes speeches, office files, campaign files, and audiovisual materials.
