Condition and Population Specific Patient Panels

The Condition and Population Specific Patient Panels have all been created in conjunction from grant funding.  Each Condition and Population Specific Patient Panel has a distinct scientific lead. If you are interested in interacting with one of our panels, please send all inquiries through the PES staff. If you are pursuing a grant and would like for the PES to create a Condition or Population Specific Panel for a project, please contact the PES staff to set up a meeting to discuss your project.

The Post-Stroke Aphasia Panel was established in 2024 to bring together individuals living with post-stroke aphasia and their caregivers to guide research and education initiatives. This panel includes members from across South Carolina. The panel’s work is supported through quarterly meetings involving collaboration with researchers, clinicians, and community organizations.

This panel is supported by the USC Brain Health Network and ongoing collaboration with Dr. Leonardo Bonilha.

The Dementia Panel is currently in development and will bring together individuals living with dementia, their care partners, and advocates to inform and guide research, education, and community outreach efforts. Recruitment for this panel is in progress, with an emphasis on including perspectives and experiences from across South Carolina. Once formed, the panel will engage in training and collaborative sessions with researchers and healthcare professionals to ensure that patient experience is central to dementia-related research. 

This panel is supported by the USC Brain Health Network and ongoing collaboration with Dr. Leonardo Bonilha.

The HIV Patient Panel was formed in 2023 to engage people living with HIV in patient-centered research and resource development. Members are committed to improving care, reducing stigma, and informing policies affecting individuals with HIV. The panel includes participants from the southeastern US, and the scientific lead for this panel is Dr. Banky Olatosi

The Long-COVID Panel (CoVIP) was created in conjunction with a PCORI Engagement Award in 2021. The patient experts that make up this panel are from across the US. The scientific leads for this patient panel are Dr. Nabil Natafgi and Dr. Ann Blair Kennedy.

The Diabetes Panel was created in 2017 from a PCORI Pipeline to Proposal, Tier A award. Patient experts on this panel have been diagnosed with Type 1, Type 2 or pre-diabetes, or were the caregiver to someone with diabetes. The projected created two patient panels, one in Greenville (urban) and one in Laurens (rural). For the original project, Dr. Peggy Wagner, founding director of the PES, was the project lead for the Greenville Panel, and Dr. Ann Blair Kennedy was lead of the Laurens Panel. Upon completion of the project, a new panel was formed with several patients from each panel. 

In 202, the Diabetes Panel Expanded with a PCORI Engagement Award . Because the panel was created to foster virtual patient engagment, the patient experts that make up this panel are from across South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. The scientific lead for this patient panel is Dr. Nabil Natafgi. 

The Breast Cancer Panel was originally created in 2017 in conjunction with Clemson University to support Dr. Julie Summey Bedi’s dissertation. In 2021, Dr. Melanie Cozad received a Prisma Health seed grant, which has allowed this panel to re-engage. 

The Rheumatoid Arthritis Panel was formed in conjunction with an Independent Grant for Learning and Change from Pfizer in 2017. Since that time, this patient panel has gone on to receive three other grants allowing for continued patient-centered work.

The patient experts that make up this panel are from across Upstate South Carolina. 

The Virtual Patient Panel was created though funding from an NIH R24  awarded in fall 2024. The patient experts that make up this panel are from across the United States. The scientific leads for this patient panel are Dr. Nabil Natafgi, Dr. Ann Blair Kennedy, and Jaime Fivecoat.
