Each semester, the Moore School's Office of Career Management hosts a Business EXPO (job and internship fair). 

  • Access the event in Handshake to see which employers have registered to-date. More than 100 employers are expected to attend.

Requirements for Business EXPO

The Moore School has a commitment to both students and employers to ensure students are adequately prepared to engage with employers in professional, meaningful ways. To that end, all students who desire to attend the Business EXPO must comply with the following requirements: 

  • Be a sophomore, junior, senior or master's student in the Moore School
  • Build your resume in one of the approved samples found in the Moore School sophomore, junior, senior or graduate community in the Career Management section of Blackboard
  • Have your professional resume approved by OCM and uploaded to Handshake
  • Sophomores, juniors and seniors must attend a 30-minute, professional development workshop on “How to Work a Job Fair.” Master's students are invited to attend, but it is not mandatory. Register for a session on Handshake, but please note that each session is limited to 40 registrants. If you have completed BADM 301, you do not have to attend.


EXPO FAQs

The most important suggestion received from employers is that students research each company they wish to meet prior to approaching a fair table. Do not ask recruiters what positions they have open or what they can do for you. Know the company’s mission and cultural values and which positions are open by viewing Handshake or the company's website. The more informed you are, the better your chances are of promoting your abilities and securing an interview.

Prepare. Do not wait until the last minute — coaching appointment availability will be limited as the event date draws closer (prepare for extended wait times). Visit Blackboard to find your major-specific career coach's contact information so you can make an appointment. The Office of Career Management also takes walk-in appointments Monday through Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Visit the Office of Career Management at least three weeks prior to EXPO in order to better prepare yourself, your resume and your pitch.

You have 30 seconds to tell the employer how you can add value to their organization and how your qualifications fit their hiring needs. Do your research, practice in the mirror, practice with a friend and stop by the Office of Career Management for guidance on crafting the perfect pitch.

First impressions last, so put your best foot forward.

WHAT TO WEAR:

  • Dress slacks with a button-down shirt
  • A skirt with a button-down shirt or blouse
  • Sports coats or blazers
  • Suit and tie

WHAT NOT TO WEAR:

  • Low-cut or tight-fitting clothing (modest dress is best for networking events)
  • Don't style your hair so that it covers up your name tag

If you would like to borrow professional attire in lieu of making a purchase for the event, you may contact Carolina Closet to book an appointment. 

Here are a few suggestions on what to bring with you on the day of EXPO:

  • Several copies of your resume on resume paper 
  • A padfolio for taking notes
  • A professional bag
  • Comfortable shoes
  • A smile and lots of confidence 

We know you'll be nervous, and so do the employers. That's okay. Just make sure you speak loudly enough to be heard, clearly enough to be understood and eloquently enough to show off how awesome you are. 

Approach the recruiter, shake their hand firmly (no weak wrists, or sweaty palms), give them your 30 second pitch, maintain eye contact, and make sure to ask questions that show you have researched the company and the position.  

MAKE SURE YOUR PHONE IS ON SILENT OR VIBRATE and out of sight during all discussions with recruiters. 

Pro Tip: Make a practice run with one of your peers or with the OCM staff. You can reach the OCM at 803-777-0149.

Make sure you close your pitch by asking the recruiter the best way to follow up and when to do it. Most importantly, follow their directions. Request contact information if it's available, or find it on LinkedIn or the company website. It's YOUR responsibility to find the information. 

After leaving the table, take a moment to jot down a few key things you learned to include in your follow-up email. 

Within 48 hours, send a short email that thanks them for speaking with you at the event, expresses enthusiasm for the position and asks about next steps in the hiring process.
